Expansion of an existing sheltered housing scheme to add 28 Extra Care flats and a range of communal facilities for use by new and existing residents. In total the new scheme provides 69 homes for older people. The proposals comprised construction of two 3-storey wings linked to the existing building, one of which includes a new shared entrance and extends to provide a new residents’ lounge and cafe. The original residents were involved in the design process from the outset and remained in occupation throughout the 18 month build period.
The site is located next to an area of woodland to the south and the existing amenity areas have been upgraded and landscaped, to create a large communal garden with connections through to the woodland area. The proposals included a woodland management plan and a number of ecological enhancements. The new building is designed to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 and incorporates both green and brown roofs and a 3-storey ‘eco-wall’ within the communal garden.
